Does Your Fuse Board Need Replacing?

Like any other part of the home, a fuse board will need to be replaced eventually. Today, households use far more electricity than we used to and we rely heavily on the electrical system to lead our daily lives. How do you know when it’s time to replace your fuse board? Here are some things to look out for:

  • The wiring looks too crowded on the board
  • If you fuses are porcelain, that means it is a very old board
  • There is any sign of burning or smoke
  • Buzzing sounds from the board
  • Power outlets spark when you plug appliances in
  • The backing on the board is black, this is a sign of an old system
Essential Safety

A Consumer Unit is Essential for Home Safety

  • Reports from fire investigators show that an increasing number of fires involve old fuse boards. New consumer units have added features to prevent fire outbreaks.
  • New consumer units have an RCD, or residual current device, which is designed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something live. RCDs offer a level of personal protection that ordinary fuses and circuit-breakers cannot provide.
  • As safety technology has improved over the years, the protection offered by a new fuse board has increased considerably.
  • Circuit breakers on new consumer units are easy to reset – just a flick of the switch and the power is back on.
  • New switchboards are designed for modern living and appliance use.
